Women, as compared to men, have more unique needs. Each woman knows that at a specific time of her life, she needs more extensive health care. These are the so-called transitional times when they mature and their physical aspects radically change. What Happens During Puberty. In the teenage years where women are known to go through an increased release of sex hormones in the body, like progesterone and estrogen. At the same time, the hormonal change can cause rapid increase blood circulation even in to the gums. As a result, the gum tissues become more sensitive and are now very reactive to even the slightest irritation brought along by food or plaque. The gums, during this stage, would appear redder and will feel soft or tender.
While the gums sensitivity will eventually recede as a young woman grows past beyond puberty it is still important to follow and practice a healthy oral hygiene regimen during these early stages. This may include regular brushing, flossing and regular dental check-ups. Medical studies often point out the relationship of periodontal disease to that of pre-term, underweight babies being born. This is because the infection from the periodontitis can affect significantly to the pregnancy of the mother. Surveys have shown that women who have periodontal disease during their pregnancy will have the greater tendency to give birth early from the expected term and the babies are considerably too small and light. A good step to prevent this is to include a thorough periodontal examination in your prenatal care when you are planning for pregnancy.
Will The Oral Problems Go Away During Menopausal Stage? Sadly, it does not. During these later stages in a woman’s life, changes in the mouth are also encountered. When they hit the menopausal stage, indications of oral health concerns include general discomfort in the mouth: dry mouth, burning sensation the gums and altered taste. There are also cases of menopausal gingivostomatitis. These conditions are often seen with dry or shiny gums that often bleed easily when irritated. Bacteria are also another cause of bad breath. Over 170 different types of bacteria live in the mouth. It’s no surprise really considering how bacteria love damp places and your mouth certainly is conducive to bacterial flora.
Now, if you do not brush your teeth after a meal, the bits of food left in your mouth become a virtual “feast” for these living bacteria. And in the process of metabolizing these, these bacteria produce volatile sulfur compounds which are extremely odorous.

Well, take the fact that these bacteria are mostly anaerobic, meaning they cannot live in the presence of oxygen. In fact, the only way they even manage to survive in your mouth where oxygen passes through often is if they hide themselves behind plaque and food debris. Common Mouth Sores Explained
Have you ever experienced painful sores or lesions in the mouth? Isn’t it frustrating? You can’t eat or speak right. Worse is, they could be symptoms of a more serious infection. If ever it lasts a week or longer, it is about time that you pay a visit to your dentist about it.
There are a lot of types of mouth sores, yet the most common are canker sores and cold sores.
Canker sores are often described as small pale yellow ulcers inside the mouth with red outer ring. This type of mouth sore is not contagious. Up until now, cause of canker sores is still unknown. Yet, specialist often relate it’s causes to a virus in the body, temporary weakness in the immune system, hormone changes, irritation, stress, and low levels of vitamin B12 or folate. There are other types of mouth sores, such as leukoplakia and candidiasis which are also common mouth sores.
Leukoplakia is a mouth sore that is described as a white or gray patch in the tongue, inside of cheeks, and the floor of the mouth. This often caused by a reaction to an irritant, rough teeth, bad fitting dentures or bridges, and smoking. Although painless, this infection, when severe, can lead to serious oral diseases such as cancer. There is another type of leukoplakia known as “hairy” leukoplakia that is often seen in people that have HIV and AIDS. Treatment of lekoplakia is associated to its cause. A rough tooth per se, it is then taken or removed by your dentists. Yet, if approaching the initial cause of it the problem is ineffective, surgery may be implemented to remove the lesion.
Candidiasis, also called oral thush, is another type of mouth sore. It is caused by a yeast found in our immune system that when triggered, can multiply and causes infections. Certain illnesses, stress, and medications can also trigger the candida in our system. This infection is often found in adults or babies. Symptoms involved presence of creamy white lesions in the mouth, the tongue, inner cheeks, roof of the mouth, gums, tonsils, or even back of the throat. Dry mouth is said to often cause candidiasis. To prevent such infection, we must practice good dental hygiene.
Treating dry mouth is often connected to producing more saliva on the mouth. Also, to further treat dry mouth, most dentists would prescribe oral rinse to help restore moisture in the mouth. If it still doesn’t help, there are other steps that may help improve saliva flow such as; sucking on sugar free candy or chewing gum and drinking lots of water. Yet, the best way still is to maintain good oral hygiene.

The Risks With Pulling Out A Wisdom Tooth
Most of our teeth grow during our younger years, save for a few. The last three or four molars to come out are usually known as wisdom teeth since they come out much later. Wisdom teeth commonly make their appearance from ages 17 to 25, when people are older and much wiser.
For many the eruption of these last few teeth often causes a great deal of pain. The pain is often caused by the piercing of the teeth through the gums. In addition to this, there may also be a lack of space due to the presence of other teeth. The addition of new teeth may cause dental deformation, inflammation and other problems. As a result many people opt to have their wisdom teeth removed. Other than the usual pain and swelling afterwards, there may be bigger problems. For those considering this, here are the risks associated with the removal of wisdom teeth.
Infection. Since wisdom tooth removal involves dental surgery there may be a possibility of infections taking place. This commonly happens after the procedure when food particles enter the socket. As a result bacteria can grow causing abnormal inflammation, discharge, pain, fever and a bad taste. In more severe cases, bacteria from the infection may travel into the bloodstream and cause complications. Milder cases of infections may be controlled through antibiotics and may not require hospitalization.
Dry Socket. The most common risk also known as alveolar osteitis, this is a postoperative condition which involves the delay in the healing process. The condition comes about when the blood clot that forms after the removal of the tooth becomes dislodged. A dry socket may also occur when a blood clot fails to form. As a result the boney socket walls become exposed. A dull continuous throbbing pain may be felt from the jaw area moving up towards the ear. Aside from the discomfort, a foul odor may also be emitted. This condition often takes place three to five days after the removal of a wisdom tooth and commonly occurs in the lower jaw.
Numbness. It is normal to experience some numbness in the mouth and lip areas during any extraction process because of the anesthetic. However, when it comes to wisdom tooth extraction the numbness may last even after the anesthetic has worn out. This can be a result of injury to the nerves in the area during the tooth extraction. In more extreme cases a condition known as paresthesia can occur. The condition involves permanent facial numbness due to permanent nerve damage.
Sinus exposure. Roots of the upper wisdom teeth are closely located to the maxillary sinuses. In some rare cases the removal of wisdom teeth in this area results in an opening in the sinus area. The opening leads to a connection from mouth to sinus and may call for surgery in order to close it. A bad smell and or taste may develop while the sinus is exposed. There may also be increased mucus discharge. Blood may also pass from the mouth to the sinus cavity causing blood to be present in the nose.
Weakened or fractured jaw. Impacted teeth or those which are fused to the jaw bone may cause the jaws to weaken or break when removed. The use of excessive force, a firmly anchored tooth and other conditions can all cause the jaws to be fractured or injured.

As dentists, we all meet patients everyday who are scared stiff of what they are about to experience in the dentist chair. Well, I’m proud to say, “I make a specialty of helping patients who are afraid of dentists!” Believe it or not, many patients find a dental appointment with me can be a relaxing experience …even enjoyable!

It’s natural to be skeptical when hearing about treatments that seem to defy medical reasoning. In the very beginning, I was skeptical myself! Many times the wisdom teeth will need to be removed because they are impacted or are just coming in the wrong way. He will write you a prescription if he wants you to have something stronger than over the counter. Make sure you carefully follow the dosing instructions.
Another thing you have to avoid after having your wisdom teeth removed is anything that requires sucking. Stay away form using straws and if you are a smoker you should stop smoking for at least a few days while you recuperate.
You will also need to be very careful about what you eat. Your mouth and jaw will be sore and the last thing you want to do is to eat any foods that are hard or really chewy. Stick with softer foods for the first week or so (your doctor will let you know when you can start eating normally again).
If you eat something hard or crunchy it could find it’s way to the incision where your tooth was removed. Trust me, you don’t want anything sharp jabbing you right in that spot for quite some time after the surgery.
Pain relief can also come from using hot or cold compresses on your cheek. This can offer inflammation relief which can take some of the pressure off the jaw and ease some of the pain.
Sleeping can be a bit of a challenge after the surgery if you are a side sleeper. It will only be a day or two though, in most cases, so don’t worry.
Wisdom tooth jaw pain can occur before and after you have your wisdom teeth taken out. The nice thing is that after the surgery the pain will go away within a few days. Before the surgery it can last until you decide to get the teeth removed. Either way, it doesn’t have to be permanent.
